Virtual Assistant is such a vague term really! Many people equate it with a Virtual Secretary or PA - and it certainly can be - but in reality, it’s anything you do brilliantly to support clients virtually.
Virtual Assistants support small business owners, entrepreneurs, and busy professionals with a huge range of services, from traditional admin to social media management, marketing, creative projects, and much MUCH more.

VAs define their specialisms in many different ways - by the services they offer, the industries they work in, or the types of clients they support. For example, when I first started, I specialised in working with PR agencies, delivering both traditional admin support as well as more industry specific tasks.
Choosing the right mix of services can help you attract clients, stand out in your niche, and build a profitable VA business.
Choosing your zones of genius: How to decide which VA services to offer
I recommend choosing no more than three zones of genius - the areas you love and are best at - and keeping your services and packages within those. This way you get to consistently do work that you enjoy, do it well, and become known for. (And there is some crossover within the zones, it’s not accidental!)
This doesn’t mean you are limited to those tasks, it just means this is where you focus your marketing efforts - they are the services you’re actively selling, and so should be the ones you’re most passionate about and able to discuss as an expert.
Below is a comprehensive list of 120+ services you could offer as a Virtual Assistant. Hopefully, one or more of the below will spark excitement in you, and by the time you’ve finished reading you’ll have a clear idea of what your zone of genius is and what sort of VA you want to be!

I’d love to know - if you are a Virtual Assistant, are there services you offer that aren’t on this list? What zones of genius do you focus on?
Key takeaways
Focus on your zones of genius - the services you enjoy, excel at, and want to be known for.
Start with what you know; you don’t need to offer everything. Less can be more, so try to stick to three areas for now!
Your offerings can evolve over time. Revisiting this list is useful as your business grows or priorities change.
Specialising in favourite services can make your business more profitable and enjoyable.
FAQs
Do I have to offer all of these services?
No! It can be tempting, especially early on, to offer a bit of everything - but it’s better to focus on promoting your strengths and passions. This makes it easier for the right clients to find you and understand exactly what you offer.
What if I’ve ended up burnt out or confused by providing too many different services?
That’s a clear signal it may be time to review things and narrow your focus to your favourite services - your zone (or zones) of genius. If the issue is more about capacity than confusion, it may also be worth considering whether it’s time to bring in associates.
Should I revisit this list regularly?
Yes! As you gain experience, your interests and business priorities may change. Revisiting your services ensures you’re working in areas you enjoy and want to be known for.
Can I combine services across categories?
Absolutely! Some of the strongest VA offerings come from combining complementary services, e.g., admin + social media, or bookkeeping + productivity support.
Can I offer bookkeeping?
Basic financial admin is fine, but formal bookkeeping or payroll services require proper qualifications, registration, and insurance.
